Our dog has diabetes. We found out last Friday when G took
her to the vet. She had been loosing so much weight, drinking a lot of water and thus needing
to go outside every few hours. We didn’t realize those were textbook symptoms hence
why we didn’t go sooner but at least they were able to diagnose her.
She’s on a
very low dose of insulin at the moment and we have seen major improvements with
her. She goes next Friday for an insulin curve test to see what her exact
dosage will be. I’m glad she’s going to be okay, the vet was very positive in
letting us know it’s manageable.
It’s not going to be cheap though.
Looking at about $3000 a year for medicine and needles; that on top of her
other vet check ups and shots. I’m glad we budget though and very thankfully to
have wiggle room. The vet bills for both last Friday and this Friday ate from
our vacation fund deposit for the month but I’m happy that it didn’t affect our
car loan payment.

We had a diabetic cat too several years ago. He didn't get to the point of insulin but we did have to buy special cat food. It added up.
ReplyDeleteYes we will be needing to purchase special food as well that they do not sell at the stores in town so we need to do a city trip every time we need to stock up: another expense there.
DeleteOh ouch!! That's expensive! :( Thankfully our cat has been very healthy all-around (once we figured out her food issues - she now gets organic/holistic grain-free food and it's worth every penny.
ReplyDeleteI wish animals could talk to we can know what works and what doesn't. We are still trying to regulate our dogs insulin levels at the moment. Hopefully we find the sweet spot soon. -fingers crossed!-
